John Chambers Connects at City National Bank Investment Conference

Posted on October 5th, 2008

The Investment Conference hosted by City National Bank for its top clients last Thursday, October 2 at The Beverly Hills Hotel was a well produced, entertaining, educational program. Some of the speakers included the chiasmic Chairman and CEO Russell Goldsmith and the witty Chief Investment Officer Richard Weiss, political pundits Arianna Huffington and Mike Murphy and other notables.

But, by far the most electrifying speaker was John Chambers, Chairman and CEO, CISCO Systems, Inc. Whereas all of the previous speakers stood stationary behind the lectern, Chambers began from center stage, moving to his right and left as he made his introductory comments. Within a few minutes he jumped off of the stage and began moving around the room pausing to speak to individual tables.

By the conclusion of his 45-minute speech “Technology: The Coming Wave of This Global Business Transformation” he had stopped several times at each of the more than 100 tables to speak to each of the eight attendees at the table. He addressed me at least six times, each time for about 3-4 seconds. Talk about eye connection, this was one of the finest examples I’ve seen.

In addition to his extraordinary ability to connect with the audience, Chambers had excellent vocal quality, devoid, thankfully, of fillers (“uh”). Add an amazing knowledge of the future of technology and you have one powerful speaker in John Chambers.

As the audience emptied the room, the conversation wasn’t about investing, the financial mess or politics, it was about the near deliriously positive impact that Chambers had on them.

Jersey Boys Give the Love

Posted on August 14th, 2008

While in New York City last week, my 16 year old daughter Gabi and I treated ourselves to what continues to be one of Jersey Boys Playbillthe most fun and exhilarating shows on Broadway – Jersey Boys.  From the opening “Ces Soirees-LA (Oh What a Night)” to the finale “Who Loves You”, we experienced a wonderful song filled celebration of The Four Seasons’ story that included 16 of the group’s original hits.   I was so wrapped up in the performance that I couldn’t believe how the time flew by.  Jersey Boys was simply one of those great life experiences that I didn’t want to end.

As we left the theater on an emotional high which I don’t recall experiencing from any other musical, Gabi said, “Hey, let’s go meet the actors at the stage door!”  So we lined up outside the theater with another 20 enthusiastic fans.  I expected the actors who portrayed The Four Seasons to make a quick exit, shake a few hands and hop in one of the shiny black limos waiting at the curb.  After all, they had exited that stage door hundreds of times.

We waited about ten minutes and then one the actors appeared and made his way slowly along the line of fans, smiling, shaking hands, autographing playbills and posing for pictures.  Another actor exited a few minutes later and embraced the fans in the same manner, as it was a few minutes later for the third actor.  Lastly, Michael Longoria, who played Frankie Valli, stepped out of the stage door.  More than the three actors who preceded him, Longoria was the one who seemed to enjoy interacting with the audience the most.  He patiently posed for second or third photos and signed playbills as he engaged his admiring fans.

The small effort on the part of the talented actors to meet audience members after the show toped an evening that I already thought to be perfect.  Clearly Jersey Boys is a sensational show, but it is the incredibly gifted actors and their Rock Star Attitudes that make Gabi and me want to come back again.

Educator Gives the Love to Rotarians

Posted on June 13th, 2008

Monica Garcia bounded on the stage with the energy of an Olympic gymnast. “Hello, Rotary Club of Los Angeles. I’m glad to be here!” she exclaimed as she flashed a big, infectious smile. Within seconds, I could see that this woman had The Rock Star Attitude. The venue was the Rotary Club of Los Angeles Annual Scholarship luncheon last Friday, May 6. Her comments were met with enthusiasm by the packed room of nearly 200, including 33 graduating high school students that had just received college scholarships from $166,000 the club has raised for new and returning recipients.

As the President of the LAUSD Board of Education, Monica knows that the transition from high school to college is a big step. So I asked her, “What is the biggest mistake high school graduates make when they enter college.” As a parent of a high school student, I smiled as she responded unhesitatingly, “Thinking they know everything”. After she elaborated on the point she added, “There’s one more mistake. Not taking a risk. Why? Because of fear. Well you know what? Fear is a liar.” Good point. She continued on by encouraging the students in the room to not be afraid to take a chance. As she wrapped up her point, she thanked me for the question and exclaimed to the audience, “This is fun! How about some more questions.”What those of us fortunate to be present at the luncheon last Friday witnessed was a woman incredibly comfortable with her ability to connect with the audience. She smiled and laughed throughout her 30 minute presentation and Q and A. As she connected with people in every part of the room, it was clear that she was having a great time. What a breath of fresh air. What a Rock Star!

Garth Brooks Gives the Love in LA

Posted on March 14th, 2008

I was fortunate to attend the Garth Brooks concert in Los Angeles in January and was amazed at how Garth continually demonstrated The Rock Star Attitude™. There were at least six instances during his five show tour:

#1- He connected with his fans from every part of the large oval stage - not just to the enthusiastic women clamoring for his attention at the front of the stage - but to those people behind and to the sides.

#2- He asked workers to reposition a lighting boom so it didn’t block the view of people sitting in an area towards the back.

#3- He gave his guitar to San Diego firefighter Brooke Linman, who was critically burned in last year’s Harris fire.

#4- Garth gave another guitar to a fan whose sign merely asked for a pick.

#5- Just before playing “The Dance” to close the set, Garth looked out and said, “That couple dancing 10 rows in, I see you…That couple that’s dancing between Sections 309 and 310 in the balcony, I see it all.”

#6- As he returned for his second encore during the fourth show, he told the crowd that a young concession stand employee backstage had just asked him what it was like to be in front of all those people. He then brought her out on stage and asked the audience to take photos. In the flashing of the cameras he gave her his hat.

More than Garth’s talent, it is The Rock Star Attitude™ that created a fan base that purchased more than 105 million albums and sold out five concerts at Staples Center concerts in just 59 minutes.

In The Power of the Pitch, I point out that successful musicians have The Rock Star Attitude™. When they show their fans how much they care about them, the fans reciprocate by attending their concerts and buying their music. I illustrated the concept with Garth Brooks, the # 1 selling solo artist in U.S. history.

Although Garth is talented, he struggled in mediocrity for many years until he learned to “give the love” to his audience. Once he changed, he landed a contract with Capital Records and grew to outsell the Beatles, Elvis, Elton John and the Rolling Stones.

UNLEASH THE POWER OF YOUR NEW BUSINESS PITCHES

Communication Expert Offers The Key to Generating Business With Winning Presentations

CHICAGO – Each day, more than 1 million business presentations are given in the United States alone. According to sales, media and speech expert Gary Hankins [link to Gary Hankins bio] whether or not those presentations turn into new business partners depends largely on the ability to communicate in a powerful, persuasive manner. That power to be persuasive and communicate effectively can often be more valuable than technical knowledge and expertise.

In his new book The Power of the Pitch: Transform Yourself into a More Persuasive Presenter and Win More Business [link to Reviews for The Power of the Pitch] (Dearborn Trade Publishing, January 2005, $22.95 paperback), Hankins details his proprietary “Pygmalion Presentation Process” and offers a time-tested formula he has used to coach thousands of sales professionals, Fortune 500 executives and sports personalities in making persuasive presentations and ultimately winning more business.

“Many professionals don’t place a premium on the power of their presentations,” Hankins says. “Typically, they spend most of their time prospecting, convincing decision-makers to see them and then preparing slides and proposals. They save the most important step of the sales process – preparing a powerful pitch that will win the business – for a hurried conversation on the way to the meeting.”

The principles in The Power of the Pitch can be used for a variety of presentation platforms: from job interviews, pitching creative concepts and client dinner meetings to sales and fundraising pitches. The book helps readers to:

Ø Overcome presentation anxiety
Ø Gain a prospect’s confidence within the first 30 seconds of a pitch
Ø Respond to objections or challenging questions from the audience
Ø Use technology such as Web conferencing to make a powerful pitch
Ø Use visuals as a powerful tool to win more business

Gary Hankins has more than 30 years of sales, media and professional speaking expertise. He began his career in the U.S. Army where he taught military personnel how to make winning presentations. He later became a top producer in the securities industry by speaking to audiences across the country and hosting his own radio and television programs in the Los Angeles market. In 1988, Hankins founded Pygmalion, Inc., to transform the way organizations and individuals communicate with clients and their prospects. He is consistently rated a top speaker by business and professional groups worldwide. For more information on Gary Hankins, visit www.pygmalioninc.com
